About the Dog:
Kazak the Hound of space is our Bullmastiff, affectionately named after a Kurt Vonnegut character from The Sirens of Titan. She was born on February 16, 2007 on a small farm at the base of Mt. Hood, Oregon. Like most first-time dog owners we were just going to “look” at the puppies, but we knew within the first 10 seconds that we would be taking one home.
As newbie dog owners, we were overly obsessed about every aspect of Kaz’s life. Her first year with us had countless moments of mistakes (overfeeding Kaz until she puked - “But they said she’d know instinctively when to stop eating!!!), frustrations (Kaz’s fear of garbage cans made it impossible for us to walk down the block on Wednesday mornings), and love (nothing is better than a puppy nuzzling into your lap for nap). We all survived no worse for the wear and I am proud to say we own the best dog on the planet.
Kaz’s demeanor is pretty typical to the breed’s standard. Bullmastiffs are guard dogs by nature and even though Kaz looks lazy, she is always aware of her surroundings. She likes nothing more than to sit on the couch with her head in my lap being hand fed Baked Lays from BJ.
About the TPLO:
Kaz usually likes to spend her days curled up on the couch, demanding belly rubs. But occasionally she gets a little feisty and needs to do some serious wilderness romping and dog clobbering. Recently, one of those “rare occasions” caused her to tear her cranial cruciate ligament (the dog version of our ACL). This injury required a $4,000 TPLO surgery where they cut and rotated her tibial bone to repair the torn ligament.
